Porky’s BBQ: Southern Charm in Downtown San Pedro

Article written by guest writer Ramon Raya – a Banning High School intern with International Trade Education Programs (ITEP).

If you’re looking to have some good Southern style BBQ and don’t mind getting your face a little dirty, then swing on by Porky’s BBQ located at 362 W. 6th Street in Historic Downtown San Pedro. The BBQ restaurant brings a little Kansas City culture with its artifact-filled decor to its astounding food.

It includes picnic tables, booths near the windows and a patio so you can enjoy some nice ribs under that Californian sun. It truly is the best BBQ in town!

Porky’s is open 7 days a week and includes a delivery service to convenience those who want delivery but are tired of that same old Pizza.

Not only is the food top quality, but all meats are always slow cooked over hickory wood. That fall-off-the-bone tenderness and smoky flavor will have you asking for seconds every time. Check out some of Porky’s signature southern dishes below.

With the ribs being slow-cooked over hickory wood daily, there’s no wonder it slides right off the bone. Covered in delicious BBQ sauce and available with one of Porky’s signature sides, you will always leave with a smile on your face. Kudos to the man in the kitchen!

A burger this big was meant for those who like a good challenge, literally.
Weighing in at 1 pound, not only is this burger enormous but delicious as well.

Getting Around the LA Waterfront This Summer: Tips & Tricks

On Father’s Day (June 21st), the San Pedro Historic Waterfront Business Improvement District trolley buses helped shuttle over 1,000 passengers through Ports O’Call Village and Downtown San Pedro. The Father’s Day crowds have shown that this will be a very busy and exciting summer at the LA Waterfront! Check out the tips & tricks below for getting around town this summer, parking options and beating the crowds.

Getting Around the LA Waterfront: Transportation Options

By Trolley

The trolley buses are a free and convenient way to get around town. They run Saturdays & Sundays with extended summer operating hours of 12 PM – 8 PM. The trolley runs a 30 minute route around the LA Waterfront & Downtown San Pedro. You will get to see various museums & attractions such as the Battleship IOWA, the Historic Warner Grand Theatre, the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and Ports O’Call Village.

Trolley PictureClick here to download the trolley schedule & map.

The trolley is a free hop-on hop-off service. You can hop off in Historic Downtown San Pedro and enjoy some fantastic restaurants including Thai, Japanese, American, Authentic Hungarian Strudel, a British Pub and several great wine & beer lounges. Stop by Urban Feet or the Surplus Guy for some comfortable footwear, because you will be walking a lot! Then hop back on the trolley to explore the waterfront. For a full list of District restaurants & stores, check out our business directory.

The Port of Los Angeles Historic Red Car

You can also get around the waterfront by riding the Historic Red Car, which runs a 1.5 mile route from the Los Angeles World Cruise Ship Terminal down to the Cabrillo Marina at 22nd Street & Harbor Blvd. The red car runs Fridays – Sundays from 12 PM – 9 PM and costs $1.00, which includes unlimited rides for the day. You can hop on the red car at any one of its four stops. Be sure to get off at the Downtown Harbor stop, where you can explore the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and walk around the brand new harbor dock. For more information about the historic red car, click here.

Visiting San Pedro On A Sunday

POC trolley

The Waterfront’s busiest day of the week is on Sundays. If you would prefer to visit when it’s quieter, we recommend coming during the weekdays or on Saturday mornings. If a lively day is more your style, then come visit on Sundays!

To help accommodate increased visitor traffic on Sundays, there is a free Ports O’Call Village Express Trolley Shuttle that runs from 12 PM – 8 PM. The express shuttle goes from the Ports O’Call overflow parking lot straight to Ports O’Call Village.

 Father's Day Trolley Map

To get to the overflow parking lot from the 110 freeway, simply take Harbor Blvd all the way down to 22nd Street. On Sundays, you will see electronic traffic signs directing you to this parking lot. On your way down Harbor Blvd, be sure to look to your right to see Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles (Open Fridays – Sundays) and Brouwerij West, a new brewery opening Fall 2015.

Park where the blue P is and hop on the free Ports O’Call Express Trolley. It stops near Ports O’Call Restaurant and near the blue Asian Pagoda building. Then it returns to the parking lot. While on the trolley, be sure to take a look at the Ghost Fish Sculpture,  a 40 foot tall blue fin tuna fish made out of steel.

Explore the Waterfront by Bike

SAN PEDRO - 04/26/2012 - (Staff Photo by Scott Varley) The Fanfare Fountain and cruise ship terminal area of harbor has been taken in under San Pedro's downtown business improvement district.

The LA Waterfront is the perfect place to explore by bicycle! Most of the waterfront is flat and relatively easy to ride. You can start at the Catalina Express San Pedro Terminal and ride down to Cabrillo Beach, which is about a 7 mile ride (round trip). You will ride past the Port of Los Angeles Fanfare Fountain (pictured above), the Battleship IOWA, Ports O’Call Village, the Cabrillo Marina and finish at Cabrillo Beach. When you’re done riding and are looking for something to eat, be sure to stop in Historic Downtown San Pedro for a great meal!

The Painted Soapery at the Arcade Building

Downtown San Pedro has welcomed another new business to our community! The Painted Soapery, an artisan soap boutique, is now open at the Historic Arcade Building at 479 W. 6th Street.

The owner of the shop, Aixa Renta-DeLuca, has been making all natural soaps for over 15 years. When asked about how she got into the soap making business, Aixa explained that she had skin problems that were not going away on their own.

“In 2000 I developed rosacea. My face would turn red whenever I exercised, when it was hot and even when I blowed dry my hair. I tried every “gentle”, “medicated”, “hypoallergenic” product/make up on the market and nothing worked.  I started making “melt and pour” base glycerin soaps thinking that it may help, adding oatmeal and some natural ingredients. Then I realized that I really had to go totally back to basics.  I learned how to make cold process soap from scratch, the old fashion way. I wanted to totally control the ingredients that I put on my skin.”

When stepping foot into the store, you really get the feeling that Aixa truly cares about what ingredients she puts in her soaps. She gave us a personal tour of her soap making process and the products that her shop provides. Check it out below!

Handmade Soaps, Salts & Scrubs

The Painted Soapery sells many different kinds of scented soaps. Of course we had to feature the Mermaid’s Delight soap, San Pedro is a seaside town after all! Aixa told us that she lives on a boat at Cabrillo Marina, which we think qualifies her as an expert in making nautical soaps!

This is just one of the shop’s soap shelves. All of the Painted Soapery’s soaps use at least 50% olive oil and all natural ingredients. All of the ingredients are listed on each soap, so you know exactly what you are putting on your body.

This is another soap that we just had to feature. For all of the coffee lovers out there, the boutique sells an Exfoliating Mochaccino. Cocoa helps to firm skin, reduce puffiness, it’s full of antioxidants and helps improve skin hydration. The second ingredient, coffee, is also an antioxidant that increases collagen production and is good for helping sensitive skin regenerate.

The Painted Soapery also offers customizable bath salts with essential oils. Stop by the shop and make your own salts! Need some help? Aixa is really knowledgeable when it comes to skin conditions. She can help you pick the best product for your skin type.

  Gifts and Souvenirs ♥

The boutique offers pre-wrapped gifts available for purchase. You can also wrap any soap in a California Souvenir label, which is the perfect present for your out of town relatives!

soap process

Aixa also hosts Soap Making Tours, where she goes into detail about the process of making all natural soaps. Did you know that it takes the soaps 4 weeks to harden? You can learn this and more interesting facts during her tour.

Post-Future: The Art Company at Williams Bookstore in Downtown San Pedro

What do The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and KISS have in common? Besides being awesome bands, they share a very talented album cover artist, John Van Hamersveld. You have most likely seen his iconic Endless Summer movie poster that is recognized around the world too.

After the historic Williams Bookstore in Downtown San Pedro closed its doors in 2013, Hamersveld and his wife, Alida Post, saw the potential of this unique space. Together they opened Post-Future: The Art Company at Williams Bookstore as a place to display and sell art, with a work space in the back for Hamersveld to create new art.

They have purposely kept the Williams Bookstore sign as a tribute to the former store, which opened in 1909 and was the oldest bookstore in Los Angeles. They also have some bookstore memorabilia on display too for visitors to see.

The Post-Future gallery is open to the public during San Pedro’s monthly 1st Thursday Artwalk, where downtown’s art galleries are open to explore, restaurants serve special menus and various food trucks come to visit. Check out Post-Future’s exhibition for the month of May below.

Gabriel Figueroa Exhibition (May 7th & 10th)

Both John & Alida invite you to come out and enjoy this month’s exhibition, which will be featuring photographic works by Gabriel Figueroa (1907-1997). The exhibition will be on display this Thursday, May 7th during the Artwalk from 5 PM – 9 PM and during the Sunday Salon on Sunday, May 10th from 2 PM – 6 PM.

Figueroa is known for his iconic images that helped to forge a Mexican visual cultural identity. The exhibition highlights Figueroa’s contribution to visual iconography. “His photos are impeccable examples of lighting, composition and chiaroscuro in both landscape and portraits.” (See the press release)

Figueroa “The Fugitive” 1947 (left) and “Lago de Patzcuaro Maclovia” 1948 (right). Gabriel Figueroa signed photographs and limited edition carbon ink jet digital photos are on view at the gallery. All images are also available for viewing and for purchase online at

 John Van Hamersveld Around Town

You will see John Van Hamersveld’s art while walking around downtown San Pedro too! Topaz at the San Pedro Waterfront has a huge piece of custom artwork done by Hamersveld in their lobby.

The artwork is 20 feet x 10 feet, it’s huge! Go check it out at 222 W. 6th Street in the Topaz Lobby. “Hamersveld’s latest work for Topaz brings the vibrant colors with which he’s become synonymous, embodied in the artist’s iconographic elements influenced by Hokusai waves, Constructivism and Dutch Abstraction.” – Jupiter Holdings Unveiling

Iconic Images That You’re Sure to Recognize

John Van Hamersveld has made a huge impact on popular culture with his extensive career of over fifty years. These images are just a small example of his amazing talent as a graphic artist. You can click here to see more of his artwork.

Hamersveld has also written a book called Drawing Attention, which highlights his approach to drawing and catalogues his designs that use music, popular culture and surfing as inspiration. As you can see from above, his art is full of color!

john and alida

John Van Hamersveld and Alida Post are true testaments that San Pedro is an ideal place to live, work and be inspired to create world class art.

Sensational Treats in Downtown San Pedro: Sweet Susie’s Candy

exterior susie (2)

There’s something about stepping into a candy shop that takes you back in time to your childhood memories. The smell of chocolate might remind you of running around the house Easter morning trying to find all of the Easter eggs before your siblings did. Or looking at all of the huge barrels of bright colored taffy candy that were as tall as you were and wondering how many pieces you might be able to get by begging your parents at the store.

Sweet Susie’s Candy Shop in Historic Downtown San Pedro has that classic feeling to it from the moment you step inside. Although you might not be 5 years old anymore, it still brings a smile to your face when looking at all of the candies that they sell.

Located in the Historic Brown Brothers Building, Sweet Susie’s has every type of candy that you could want. Esmeralda Rojas, the owner of the shop and a San Pedran, is truly a candy connoisseur. While she was growing up her family owned a candy store in Querétaro, Mexico, where she became familiar with the business. Rojas opened up her shop here in San Pedro in December 2012 and has been keeping San Pedro sweet ever since.

Sweet Susie’s specializes in traditional, vintage and imported candies. Some of the unique imported candies include:

  • Dulce de Leche (a rich, decadent candy similar to caramel)
  • Alfajor de Coco (small cookies traditionally filled with dulce de leche then rolled in coconut)
  • Rollo de Guayaba (roll candy made out of guava fruit, covered in sugar)
